Irrespective of the "accepted plural form" of leaf, the Toronto Maple Leafs are not named for the leaf of the maple tree. Their name reflects two things:
1 - the name of the arena in which they original played (the Maple Leaf Gardens)
and
2 - the national symbol, the (singular) Maple Leaf (a singular, proper noun).
Further, the pluralization applies to the team as a whole, not the leaves individually.
Does that make it any clearer?

The Maple Leafs were once named the "Toronto St. Patrick's".

Conn Smythe, a coach from the area took control of the team around 1927 and eventually the team was renamed after The Maple Leaf Regiment, a group of Canadian soldiers who were in service during World War I.

Thus, this plural form of "leaf" is correct.

I'm pretty sure it's because the plural is applied to "Maple Leaf" as a name... becoming "Leafs" (because it's not an actual leaf, but a name)... On the other hand, leafs is also an accepted plural form of leaf: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/leaf... either way, Canadian Beer is better!
